  • Colored paper

How I approached this:

Theo was really excited about this one! He has been very interested in shapes lately. For this, I simply just stacked three different colored papers on top of each other, and cut out the four basic shapes, a circle, a square, a triangle, and a rectangle.

Then I asked him to do different things. First, I asked him to sort the shapes by their color. This is a very easy task for him. Secondly, I asked him to sort them by shape. This one was a little tricky for him. At first he didn’t understand what I was saying so I demonstrated. Once I demonstrated Theo was able to do the second direction.

Since it didn’t seem too difficult for him, I then asked him to create a simple A.B., A.B., A.B. pattern. I also had to model this. I used two different shapes to do this. After explaining he did not understand how to do this and figured this may be a little better suited for him when he’s a bit older.

Afterwards, I simply just let him free play with the shapes. He was using them for about 15 minutes after the parent lead activity, and I couldn’t be more pleased!
